Outgoing President Chris Viegas
Says “It’s Time…”Chris Viegas, has served the board for 12 years as President and fearless leader. She and former board member John Hartwig, had a vision, many years ago, to create a Lake Management Plan. Chris led the innovative lake management plan such that today, other nearby lake boards use the same model. Today, our Lake Management Plan is prepared based on new technologies, water testing, weed surveys, weed mapping, science, new research, recommendations from scientists, the budget based on annual member dues collection, and years of Board knowledge. That said, Mother Nature can throw us off like last summer - low water and little rain that exposed weeds. “It was my pleasure to serve the Pine Lake Property Owners Association and help develop the Lake Management Plan, with help from John Hartwig, Kevin Tourneur, Heath Williams, Dr. David Jude, Savin & of course our PLPOA Board. It is time to enjoy some time with my dear husband Les, who is an 8 year lung transplant recipient! Fortunately, current board members, long term resident Lucy Young and Elaine Coffman, have graciously agreed to help carry the Pine Lake torch as Co-Presidents. The Success of Your Membership Dollars
Celebration - In 2016, 10% of the lake weeds were thick and heavy *invasive Eurasian Milfoil (EU). They canopied over the water’s surface, burned out boat engines that got caught in the EU, and it was discovered, that our old method of weed harvesting was proven to S P R E A D EU. In 2020 as a result of four years of weed treatment, we are happy to say the invasive EU lake weeds have been reduced from 10% to 2%!
Solutions - In 2017 we treated EU beds (not the whole lake) with 2-4D and added a *bio-wash with some success because the weed beds became smaller, however we found that they hybridized. In 2020 - 21 we used 2-4D with a bio-wash and initiated three pilot areas with a newer product called ProcellaCOR. ProcellaCOR has a top EPA safety rating and proved to have great results ELIMINATING EU beds in those pilot areas. ProcellaCOR has proven to be a great solution but is much more costly.
Thank you staying off the lake during weed treatments, it helped make the the process more effective, cost effective and successful!
Costs - The Board allocates approximately $25,000 - $36,000 each year for weed management. ProcellaCOR has proven to be more effective in eliminating EU than 2-4D, but is more costly. ______________ *Bio-Wash - A generic term for a product that improves the efficacy of and reduces the amount needed. It reduces surface tension, permitting improved absorption thus reducing the amount & cost of the primary product needed. *An invasive species is one that is not native and whose introduction causes harm, or is likely to cause harm, to Michigan's environment, economy or human health.

Addressing High Phosphorus In Pine LakePhosphorus & Ammonia - For years, Dr. Jude, our lake limnologist, has reported phosphorus and ammonia levels have been increasing in the bottom of the lake’s 3 deep holes. This has caused our oxygen levels to reduce from about 60’ to 30’. This means healthy habitat used to be found at 60 foot depths, it is now only around 30 feet. Dr. Jude reports this warrants attention.
The Board is assessing options that will impact the budget as we continue managing lake weeds and look at ways to manage phosphorus - more information to come.
Three options for reducing phosphorus are being tried in lakes around the country:
1. Oxygenate the deep holes by pumping air using pipes (very expensive)
2. Treat each hole with Alum, which binds with Phosphorus (expensive)
3. Treat each hole with a newer product Phoslock, a clay based product which binds with phosphorus, and has an excellent EPA rating (expensive). City of Austin, Texas uses Phoslock on Lake Lady Bird see article

Report Incidents - Emergency #’s for Your PhoneThe marine sheriff patrols the lake on random days and times. He/she will not see every incident, or the same things you see. That said, if you witness an incident, or accident, excessive noise, traveling too close, traveling the wrong way, etc, get the MC# or take a video and call the the appropriate number below. If there is no sheriff on the lake, they can sometimes put a “jump boat” in the water or make a visit to the homeowners, provided they have proof.
