LAKE WEED TREATMENT UPDATE

Savin Lake Services will be on the lake doing the spring lake weed survey, tentatively, this Friday, June 17. The survey samples & documents height, density, location and weed type around the lake.

Moving forward, the survey along with projected high temperatures that allow weeds to explode, will drive the date for the next native weed treatment in the boat lanes. The lake is an ecosystem, we have to keep in balance with nature.

We will send another communication, after Savin completes the weed survey and makes a recommendation to the Board, for the next weed treatment.

As always, Savin will treat native weeds where we have permission and in the boat lanes only. Please note, some associations, businesses and residents may have hired Savin to treat around their docks and shoreline.

The good news is, low water level is not part of this years paradigm! As we know, low water allows sunlight to reach more weeds so that they grow and become a nuisance - caught in boat props and unpleasant swimming.

Any kind of excess weeds are not desirable - keeping in mind - lawn fertilizer feeds weeds.

POTENTIAL FISH KILL

Temperatures will be reaching the 90’s during the next few weeks. CARP and other fish are spawning, so we may see a fish kill, like Pine Lake had several years ago, on Father’s Day weekend.

Dr. Jude, our lake limnologist explained, that if the lake heats up too fast on the edges, the fish are unable to get to the deep water fast enough, because they are spawning, and we may see dead fish.

If you find dead fish on your shore, please double bag any dead fish and throw them out.

FYI, every 10 years PLPOA funds a fish study with Dr. Jude (this summer) where he takes a deeper look at the diversity, size, species and health. Elaine and Lucy our Co-Presidents and Dr. Jude will be reporting on this study when we have the information.
