Water Level - Mother Nature Comes Through!

Since our last update, we have had several storms and the lake level has finally come up significantly over last month!  Lake level is currently at 930.9.  While it is still a bit low, it is not as dire as it was in February.  The downward trend has stopped, and we have been gaining water.  There is still an opportunity for those spring rains to bring us to an ideal level.

Goose Remediation During April - Report Goose Gathering and or NESTS - ASAP - Need Your Help

PLPOA files a permit, annually, with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources-Wildlife Division, to allow us to hire a contractor (Goose Busters LLC) to perform goose egg collection & nest destruction. The company comes to the lake, twice, in April, approximately two weeks apart. They launch a boat in the lake and travel to areas where we had nests in prior years, or where residents report a suspicious geese nesting area.

We need your help! PLEASE Contact us if geese are loitering in your area because there may be nests. Tell us the best description of the area of concern from the lake view. Often you will see a pair, then just the male swimming in the area.

Once the eggs are hatched, we are unable to do anything. Geese droppings contribute to the elevation of E coli in the lake. Removal of the eggs and nests will encourage the geese to migrate north. Every little bit helps:
* 2021 we removed 3 nests with a total of 19 eggs
* 2022 we removed 4 nests with a total of 26 eggs.

Fertilizer Update - Please Do your Part!

Every spring/summer season PLPOA spends $33k plus to control and treat excessive weed growth in Pine Lake. Fees are paid directly from the membership dues. Weed growth is fueled by lawn fertilizer runoff from the watershed (areas surrounding the lake) which includes all lakefront homeowners, condos, subdivisions and businesses.

 Because of the problem, PLPOA was instrumental in getting West Bloomfield Township to amend its lawn fertilizer ordinance. The amended ordinance that PLPOA requested was approved by the township:

1. No fertilizer zone is 50 feet from lakes and streams.

2. No lawn fertilizer is allowed before May 1 or after Oct 1.

Lawn Fertilizer companies are interested in making money and will try to convince homeowners to buy expensive programs that include 4-6 applications of lawn fertilizers each season.

4-6 applications of lawn fertilizer ARE NOT NECESSARY and fuel excessive weed growth in our lake especially along Long Lake Road and in the south bay along Long Lake Road and Interlaken (where we have to treat weeds every season).

Please ask your lawn fertilizer to cut back or eliminate the lawn fertilizer applications for your property.

Treatment for grubs/insects and lawn weeds are not included in our request.

A majority of lakefront homeowners, some condos and businesses have lawn irrigation systems that pump water out of the lake to run their sprinklers. This lake water is full of nutrients as well as nitrogen and Phosphorous (used in lawn fertilizer), so homeowners, condos and businesses that are using lake water to water their lawns should cut back or eliminate lawn fertilizer to save money and help reduce fertilizer that runs off into Pine Lake and fuels weed growth.

Website Skills - Periodical Support

Janine Kateff, volunteer, who led the PLPOA Board Communications for 10+ years has moved South to be closer to family. Her ability to keep you informed thru the PLPOA Newsletter, Website and Facebook changed PLPOA from quarterly paper mailings to maybe not high tech… but certainly moved us into electronic communications!

But now…we get to reality…. Leading Communications is challenging. We are seeking for a new volunteer with the desire to contribute and give back to the community who can provide inspire newsletters and maintain the website. We use SquareSpace and their hosting services for newsletter creation and emailing. If interested,send us a message. Please?

Excel Analytical Skills - Short Term Task

The heart of communications is knowing and maintaining accurate information on your membership. Unfortunately, we do not have one integrated system for membership between finance and communications. We are seeking a short-term volunteer with Excel Analytical skills who is up for a challenge! Our goal is to develop a series of spreadsheet tabs that compares information from both systems. It identifies changes in names, addresses, and emails so both systems can be updated with the same information. You would not be working with the real information, just formatted test data.
