Geese are naturally drawn to well-maintained, freshly cut, and fertilized lawns. To discourage them from settling on your property, consider these effective shoreline strategies: Let the grass grow tall: Geese prefer open, short grass for easy visibility and access. A taller, natural shoreline disrupts their comfort. Use reflective tape: Bright, flashing surfaces can confuse and deter geese from approaching. Implement other distractions: Wind spinners, decoys, or motion-activated deterrents can make your shoreline less inviting.
A combination and rotating these tactics will help keep geese off your property while maintaining a healthy and balanced waterfront environment. Lucy Shields Henney DVM, Silver Sponsor & Board Member ________________________________________________________________________________________ Water Level UpdateWith the steady rain we’ve had over the past few weeks, the Pine Lake water level remains at a relatively high water level, measuring approximately 932.025 feet above sea level and about 5 inches above the desired level. As a reminder, Pine Lake is a basin lake and depends entirely on rain and snow for replenishment; we cannot bring additional water in! The Board has been working to release water in the past few weeks when there have been significant downpours, but also cautiously manages the flow to maintain water levels as high as reasonably possible to help protect the lake during anticipated summer drought conditions, hot temperatures, and windy weather. The greatest factor that impacts declining water levels are sunny days! PLPOA continues to carefully balance lake levels to support overall lake health while avoiding excessively high water that could negatively impact docks, seawalls, and shoreline properties. ________________________________________________________________________________________ Weed Treatment UpdateThe Board has been working closely with Progressive and Savin to develop a survey and treatment plan that allows us to begin weed treatments as early in the season as possible. Progressive completed lake surveys in May and early June, and Savin performed the first weed treatment on June 15, 2026. Several Board members have been out on the lake over the past several days to assess the effectiveness of the treatment. Progressive is scheduled to conduct another lake survey during the week of June 28, 2026. Based on those survey results, Savin will perform a follow-up treatment, if needed, later that same week. To minimize disruption during the holiday, no treatments will be scheduled over the Fourth of July weekend. Once the treatment date is confirmed, we will send a blast email to keep everyone informed. Stay tuned! The Board is also finalizing plans for weed harvesting in July. As we have shared previously, maintaining a healthy lake requires carefully balancing the management of both invasive and native aquatic vegetation. Our goal is to control invasive species while preserving the beneficial native plants that support Pine Lake’s healthy ecosystem. The lake experts and consultants we work with continue to tell us that Pine Lake remains one of the healthiest lakes in Michigan. We encourage all riparians and lake association members to become familiar with the various aquatic plants found in Pine Lake so they can better recognize beneficial native vegetation versus invasive species. However, excessive phosphorus levels can lead to overgrowth, causing ecological imbalances such as dangerous algae blooms and aesthetic issues. One action you can take is to reduce runoff of fertilizer from your property. If you do fertilize your lawn, do not fertilize within 50 feet of the lake or canal. 2026 Boat Gate Registration Form _______________________________________________________________________________________ 2026 Celebration FireworksAs noted on our PLPOA Calendar, Pine Lake Country Club will be hosting fireworks on Sunday, September 6, 2026 in celebration of Labor Day Weekend.There will be several clubs and communities nearby that are doing fireworks to celebrate our US Independence in the days and weeks ahead. Many of these can be seen from the docks around Pine Lake or an evening cruise around our lake! These fireworks commence around dusk or sunset (between 9:15 pm and 9:45 pm). Hope you get a chance to enjoy these as well!
