Lake Weed Treatment
Week of June 9th between Monday-Thursday - Date TBA

Note: You may see Savin’s boat on the lake performing the weed treatment some time the week of June 9th between Monday and Thursday. We don’t have the exact date yet and will send another communication and post signs a few places around the lake when we do.

1. FOR BOATERS – Stay off Lake!
Please stay off the lake until the morning of the next day as large wakes/waves are disruptive to the application of the invasive weed treatments (including Eurasian Milfoil and Curly Leaf Pondweed). The treatment will target the invasive weeds and control native aquatic vegetation in boating lanes.

We suggest no swimming or boating to avoid disrupting the water.

2. FOR ANYONE WITH SPRINKLERS USING LAKE WATER – Turn THEM Off!
Savin recommends all sprinklers using lake water should be turned off for 3 DAYS at the application rate being applied (5 days for food crops and production ornamentals). We have not had damage after 24 hours in the past, but this is the official recommended wait time.

We are happy to report our survey of the lake last fall showed continued success in the treatment of Eurasian Milfoil.

We believe one of our success factors in treatments the last several years is the lack of boat traffic on the water. Please wait to boat until the morning after the treatment.

PLPOA Annual Meeting Highlights

I'd like to share with you a quick update from the May 8, 2025, the Pine Lake Property Owners Association (PLPOA) annual meeting held via Zoom. Key lake health updates and operational matters were presented and discussed. Dr. David Jude, Pine Lake’s limnologist since 2011, praised the lake’s condition while noting concerns about an anoxic layer (lack of oxygen) at the lake bottom and the presence of invasive species like Eurasian milfoil and starry stonewort. He and lake management consultant Paul Hauser emphasized the importance of reducing fertilizer use, cleaning bilges, and planting rain gardens to prevent pollution and the spread of invasive species. The lake remains biodiverse with healthy fish populations, and Progressive Companies will continue seasonal aquatic surveys and treatments. A water level update confirmed spring levels were slightly above target, which is ideal heading into summer.

Treasurer Heath Williams reported a healthy financial position with a $17,652 surplus and recommended maintaining annual dues at $225, which the membership approved. Goose control efforts, which began in 2018, continued successfully with 24 eggs removed this season. Water safety was addressed with an overview of motorized boat activity and reminders about lake regulations, including wake boat behavior. Communications Chair Donna Seligman encouraged members to update their email addresses and support PLPOA’s outreach efforts, including the newsletter. Incumbent board members Donna Seligman, Heath Williams, and Stacy Sullivan were re-elected for new three-year terms. It was noted that the Board is also conducting a by-law review to reflect the modernization of conducting Association business; the revised by-laws will be brought to the membership for approval in the future.

Tips for keeping Geese off your Property

Keeping Geese Away from Your Property and Shoreline Geese are naturally drawn to well-maintained, freshly cut, and fertilized lawns. To discourage them from settling on your property, consider these effective shoreline strategies:

• Let the grass grow tall: Geese prefer open, short grass for easy visibility and access. A taller, natural shoreline disrupts their comfort.

• Use reflective tape: Bright, flashing surfaces can confuse and deter geese from approaching.

• Implement other distractions: Wind spinners, decoys, or motion-activated deterrents can make your shoreline less inviting.

A combination and rotating these tactics will help keep geese off your property while maintaining a healthy and balanced waterfront environment.

The current lake level is 931.7 which is about 2" over. With all the rain we have had this season we are in good shape for July.

Improving Water Quality

Phosphorus is a key nutrient that contributes to the growth of aquatic plants and algae in lakes. However, excessive phosphorus levels can lead to overgrowth, causing ecological imbalances such as dangerous algae blooms and aesthetic issues. One action you can take is to reduce runoff of fertilizer from your property.

If you do fertilize your lawn, do not fertilize within 50 feet of the lake or canal. Also consider creating a rain garden.

Boat Safety - Time to Review DNR Website

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources Boating Website is a great way to stay informed. Get information on boating classes, who needs a certificate and how to earn one, or review the boating safety checklist.

Boat Safety - What NOT to Do!

• Boaters on the lake traveling the wrong way

• PWC’s going the wrong way and driving too close to boat sterns

• Playing speakers too loud. Sound travels across the water.

• Wake-boarding too close to shore (200 ft violation)

• Young passengers sitting on the bow of pontoon, dangling their feet in the water while in motion

• Boats towing skiers, tubers, wake boarders and surfers without a life jacket/personal floatation device or observer

• Passengers on pontoon boats sitting on the “front deck” (beyond the front gate

  while the engine is on

• Boats less than 200 feet from the shore, boats, anchored boats, docks, rafts, and other structures

• Creating a wake when less than 200 feet of any dock, boat, raft, shoreline, buoy or occupied swim area.

  The buoy in front of the Marina cautions boaters that this is a wake zone.
  These behaviors are very dangerous and could lead to severe injury or death!

Boat Safety - Reminders

• Follow Michigan Boater requirements

• Navigation lights at dusk

• Stay in the deep water path!

• No skiing, tubing, or surfing 1 hour after sunset

• Stay out of ski course and away from buoys

• Holidays, especially July 4th weekend, are very busy.

• Be patient and be mindful of safety. Wake will be challenging for many boating activities

• Violation of Distance Requirement – 200 ft No Wake 7/24

• PWC‘s are not allowed from Sunset to 8 AM per Michigan law
