Weed Management Plan - Weed Harvest Date TBA

This year the PLPOA, based on recommendations from our lake management partners, are making changes to how we are managing the weed growth that is impacting our boat lanes.

Our focus for weed management is different for invasive weeds than it is for native weeds.

Next Step - Nuisance Natives
• Generally, native weeds are healthy for our lake and we have many areas of natives that are never treated
• However, when native weeds make up 50% or more of the water column in boat lanes, it creates challenges navigating our lake – hence the term “nuisance natives”
• EGLE closely regulates treating natives and Progressive ensures we follow all rules when treating nuisance natives in our boat lanes
• EGLE has begun restricting the areas where we are allowed to treat. We were able to get a special permit approved in 2024 for some areas of the lake, but the weeds this year are bad outside of these permitted areas

Weed Harvesting: Progressive and Savin have advised us to begin using weed harvesting in our weed management strategy again for several reasons:
• Nuisance natives have been a consistent issue in the boat lanes and are particularly bad going into July this year
• Milfoil is now under control (no concern about cutting fragments and spreading the invasive)
• EGLE is limiting our ability to manage boat lanes with application
• Harvesting removes plants from the lake which reduces the phosphorus loading on the lake when those weeds decompose at the end of the season

PLPOA requested Progressive conduct a bid for harvesters in early 2025:
• Solicited 4 bids, received 3
• Oakland Harvesters selected not just for price, but also the quality/age of their harvesters to minimize debris as well as technology to report the amount and areas harvested

2018 was the last year where weeds were harvested in late summer and harvesting had been done regularly for many years on the lake in the past. Given current conditions with nuisance natives, we have made the decision to begin harvesting again.

Pine Lake Country Club Fireworks on the Lake

Please keep a safe distance from the barge during the display. The fireworks vendor will return the following day for cleanup, but we ask all residents to check their shoreline for any debris and help remove what they find. Your participation keeps Pine Lake beautiful—thank you!

💡 Note: The Country Club also hosted fireworks in July to honor Wounded Warriors. This event was not shared with us in advance, but going forward, the Country Club will notify us prior to any planned fireworks so we can keep the community informed.

Pine Lake Tragedy - Sheriff Office Is Asking for Our Help

On Tuesday, July 29, the body of an unidentified man was found floating in Pine Lake near 3200 block of Pine Lake Road after 8:30 PM on Tuesday, July 29th, 2025. The victim is described as a black male, approximately 6 feet tall, weighing 140 pounds, and believed to be between 20 and 40 years old. He was wearing a white T-shirt, black jogging pants, and black Adidas athletic shoes (size 10)

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office responded and continues to work to confirm his identity and needs our help. If you have any information or video (from your Ring cameras, etc.) that may be helpful to identify the person or how they got into the lake.  

To assist the investigation, review your security footage from Tuesday, July 22nd through Tuesday, July 29th, 2025.  If your cameras cover lake access points, docks, or shoreline areas, it’s also worth checking any unusual activity between July 22nd–29th, especially if your system uses motion detection or logs events.

Electric Boats … Pros & Cons

Electric boats are transforming boating by offering clean, quiet, and low-maintenance alternatives to gas-powered vessels. They provide a peaceful ride without emissions, oil, or engine noise, making them ideal for calm lakes and eco-sensitive areas. These boats are easy to use, often featuring touchscreen controls and mobile apps for battery and range monitoring. They can tow tubes, wakeboards, and water skis, offering plenty of fun for casual recreation.

However, electric boats come with trade-offs. They typically cost more upfront and have shorter range, limiting longer trips, especially where charging stations are few. They also lack ballast systems used to create large surf wakes, making them less suitable for wake surfing. And because electricity and water don’t mix, the battery systems must be fully sealed and protected.

Boat Safety - Time to Review DNR Website

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources Boating Website is a great way to stay informed. Get information on boating classes, who needs a certificate and how to earn one, or review the boating safety checklist.

Boat Safety - What NOT to Do!

• Boaters on the lake traveling the wrong way

• PWC’s going the wrong way and driving too close to boat sterns

• Playing speakers too loud. Sound travels across the water.

• Wake-boarding too close to shore (200 ft violation)

• Young passengers sitting on the bow of pontoon, dangling their feet in the water while in motion

• Boats towing skiers, tubers, wake boarders and surfers without a life jacket/personal floatation device or observer

• Passengers on pontoon boats sitting on the “front deck” (beyond the front gate

  while the engine is on

• Boats less than 200 feet from the shore, boats, anchored boats, docks, rafts, and other structures

• Creating a wake when less than 200 feet of any dock, boat, raft, shoreline, buoy or occupied swim area.

  The buoy in front of the Marina cautions boaters that this is a wake zone.
  These behaviors are very dangerous and could lead to severe injury or death!

Boat Safety - Reminders

• Follow Michigan Boater requirements

• Navigation lights at dusk

• Stay in the deep water path!

• No skiing, tubing, or surfing 1 hour after sunset

• Stay out of ski course and away from buoys

• Holidays, especially July 4th weekend, are very busy.

• Be patient and be mindful of safety. Wake will be challenging for many boating activities

• Violation of Distance Requirement – 200 ft No Wake 7/24

• PWC‘s are not allowed from Sunset to 8 AM per Michigan law
