PLPOA Goose Remediation Program: March thru Mid-April

Help Us Mitigate the Geese Population Around Pine Lake

Why It's Important: Overpopulation of geese around the lake causes several issues, including:

  • Health risks from droppings (e.g., E. Coli, Salmonella).

  • Unpleasant odors and bare patches on lawns.

  • Increased nutrient levels in the water, leading to algae blooms and weed growth.

  • Aggressive and noisy behavior, especially during nesting season, which can deter recreational activities like swimming, boating, and fishing.

How We Mitigate the Geese Population: With a DNR permit, Goose Busters LLC humanely collects unhatched eggs from nest locations. They approach the nests by boat.

How You Can Help: From March to mid-April, we need your help to identify and mark geese nest locations. Here's what to do:

  1. Spot suspicious geese activity: Look for a pair of geese on your property or in the water. If you see only the male nearby, the nest is likely in the area (often in the same spot as previous years).

  2. Collect flags: Pick up TWO flags from the labeled Blue Rubbermaid bin at the left side of the boat ramp at Pine Lake Country Club.

  3. Mark the nest area:

    • Place ONE flag at the shore to notify Goose Busters of the property.

    • Place the SECOND flag close to the suspected nest location.

  4. Send Email ASAP: Email your address and nest description location details to info@pinelakemi.com and lhenney@comcast.net.

Important Note: Please ensure there is actual nesting behavior or a physical nest, as geese may sometimes move through areas without nesting.

Tips to Keep Geese Off Your Property:

  • Landscaping: Plant tall grasses or shrubs to discourage nesting.

  • Visual Deterrents: Use decoys (move them regularly), reflective tape, or pinwheels.

  • Noise: Try noise makers or sonic repellents.

  • Barriers: Install fences or cover ponds with netting.

  • Repellents: Use non-toxic sprays like those with grape extract.

  • Avoid Feeding: Keep your lawn clean and free of food sources.

Thank you for your support in preserving our lake's beauty and enjoyment!
